Leonid Toptunov was a Russian engineer who was responsible for operating the control systems at the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant during the infamous disaster in 1986. He was on duty in the control room when a safety test went wrong, resulting in a catastrophic explosion and fire that released large amounts of radioactive material into the atmosphere.
Toptunov was one of the first people to realize the severity of the situation and took immediate action to try and mitigate the damage. He attempted to shut down the reactor and prevent further destruction, but his efforts were ultimately in vain.
Toptunov suffered severe radiation exposure during the disaster and died a few days later from acute radiation sickness. He has been hailed as a hero for his bravery and sacrifice in trying to prevent further disaster at Chernobyl.
